What is this?
In short, it’s a refusal to go quietly.
I’m a transgender lesbian living in the United States. I’ve been writing for a year and a half now, and in even that short time I’ve seen people vanish from my community, heard the stories of those forced to stay in or return to the closet, and watched with creeping dread as politicians have passed myriad laws banning people like myself from public life. Just a month ago, the American people gave those same politicians the keys to the castle, and broad control of congress and the supreme court.
This is a cry for help, for understanding, for alliance, made to a public that I honestly don’t know can hear it. It is also a call for unity, for solidarity, for compassion and aid and patience to a community that is both growing around the world, and being shoved into an ever-shrinking box here in the US. I hope the people in my community will find understanding, will feel seen, will feel appreciated by what I write here, and I hope those outside will understand the importance and urgency of the present moment, and will be all the more convinced to stand stalwart at our side.
I am angry, I am sad, and I am tired. All I can do is write, so I will. I’ll write about my life, and the lives of my friends and loved ones. I’ll write about the policies being considered and enacted, and about the actions being taken to both our detriment and our benefit. I’ll write screeds of hope against our despairs and bounties of caution about partial victories, and I will write stories of an imagined world where we are better off then we are to day, in the hope that inspiration still stands a chance against a greying future.
I don’t know exactly what this will be yet, but I know it will be a collection and publication of essays, of think pieces, and of short stories all in service of two foundational goals: First, to weave a sense of connection and hope into the wonderful community I love so dearly, and second, to help those outside understand the importance of standing in solidarity with us.
So, join me on this journey, please. The transgender community has such a tapestry yet to weave, and I hope each of us may contribute our own threads some day.
We will hold our loved ones close and keep them safe. We will stand with individuals we’ve never met in solidarity. We will survive, as we always have. Exist, as we always have. Make our voices known, as we always have.
